I've not heard of that before. If panel space or finances are
limited, a hand held is the perfectly acceptable option to a panel
mount. As I stated in an earlier post, I'm able to receive aircraft
transmissions 150+ miles out and have communicated with our local
control tower 80 miles out. I'm using a JHC with external antenna
and plugged in to aircraft power. It has 5 watt
output. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/32133949/IMG_8619.JPG A
new unit comes with a headset adaptor so you can plug in to the radio
direct in the KR1. I use a two place intercom with mine.

You can purchase an adaptor to eliminate the battery. Mine is
mounted below the panel and I operate it with my left hand so I don't
have to switch hands on the stick. Good buys on e-bay if you're
comfortable going that route or just a bit more for factory new. I'd
suggest getting the nav/com rather than just the nav even if they are
planning to discontinue the omni's. On second thought I've only used
the nav side once in 500+ hours.

As always, your results may vary............
