I appreciate all the replies to this question, but I actually made this post last June, the issues were thoroughly covered, and today apparently Donald Laverick accidentally reposted it.
There's been a lot of water under the bridge since then, and the stud's been replaced, the engine rebuilt, and heads replaced with some single plug heads...which I've decided will work for me.
