I'd suggest you wait on buying avionics until the airplane is 
finished.  However, if you want them now, I've been using the JRC (or 
JHP) 520 nav/com for about $250 if you shop around.  I use a battery 
eliminator(sold at A.S.) and plug into aircraft power and use a good 
external antenna.  It is a 5 watt unit and I get a range of 50 miles 
easily when airborne.  You can see my setup at

intercom plugs into the top of the radio and is located behind my 
seat to keep headset cords out of my lap.

I've been using the IFLY 720 for several years now and consider it 
top of the line.  Visit their web page.  They have a more expensive 
IFLY 740 out now but claim it to be the most sunlight readable in the 
industry.  I'm guessing someone you know has one.  Check it out.
