The tubes on the O-200 mount are all 5/8 x .058" 4130.  With the exception of 
the 4 tubes with washers welded to them that butt up against the firewall for 
the firewall through bolts and the 4 tubes with washers welded to them that 
engine mounting bolts pass through.  Each of those 8 tubes are 5/8 x .110" with 
an AN970-6 washer welded to it, then have a 3/8" bolt pass through for bolting 
the mount to the firewall and the engine to the mount. 

I would think a VW would probably be OK on lighter tubing, so would probably go 
with the 5/8 x .049" 4130 for all of the bracing.
