Ayah, it is not advised to get anything conductive near a 24 volt battery, 
especially a Ni-Cad. I knew a young airman who ran the battery shop at 
Homestead AFB, FL in the early '70's. He was carrying a big (2K Amp-Hr) Ni-Cad 
with the QD facing him and somehow managed to get the buckle of his issue web 
belt to short out the terminals. The 2nd degree burn on his stomach was about 
sandwich plate sized.
