I too used the Whelen socket on the tail and both wings with the
little "high dollar" aircraft cup lenses. I got mine off the Cessna
150 I salvaged out, not an option for all builders. However you
mount them remember the LED's are polarity sensitive. Make sure the
voltage is connected to the "center" pin or they won't work.

To install the tail light on the rudder I sanded the rudder to
shape. I then cut out a square on the trail edge large enough to
mount the light. I glued in a foam block and sanded it to a
streamline shape ending with a barrel shape large enough to mount the
socket inside. I mounted the socket and lens with the two screws
that hold the lens to the socket. Clear as mud, right? I recommend
before sanding the foam block to shape that you seal and let cure the
foam area around the block with epoxy/ micro mix so it doesn't get
messed up when you sand the block. It's the little things that make
coasting down the hill of life so enjoyable. :-)
