I see that you already have a programming background. Apart from coding GSoC is also about how you mingle with the community. So, First thing I would suggest you is to join the Kopete-devel mailing list, read the incoming mails, hang out in the IRC channel and keep yourself informed and try to get involved. Second, Since only one student can get selected to work on history plugin, the KDE team will select the best student, so show us that you are the best by contributing to the Kopete code. Your contribution can be as big as adding a some feature, or fixing some bug, or as small as documenting a piece of code( I am assuming you already have the development environment setup ). Third, understand the current history plugin code. If you can demonstrate that you are passionate and you have understood the current code and discussed with your mentors and other developers about how you are going to make it better, you will be a very good candidate for selection.
