While not being a major Kopete developer (I just fix visual glitches here and 
there), it looks OK to me. For the sake of consistency I'd suggest to use the 
same border-less window that appears when you click on the yellow post-it icon 
in the lower left of the contact list (it doesn't have a task bar entry 
either).

Specific for your work in Kubuntu: Please don't change strings for your 
SC 4.4-based release (like "Message" to "Message...") unless you guys can 
guaranty to re-translate all changed strings. IMO the missing ellipsis is a 
smaller glitch than non-translated strings.
For your patch that will hopefully make it into SC 4.5, it should of course 
have the ellipsis.

BTW, don't forget to port some popular 3rd party KDE apps to 
KStatusNotifierItem (KShutdown and KMess come into my mind, but I have no idea 
about their popularity).
