My experience is that if the MARC fields are structurally accurate, it’s a good idea but not necessary. For example, as long as a 650 field has something that Koha recognizes as possibly having something to do with a subject heading, it will import. Also, if the record lacks mandatory fields such as the 942, it will import but if you try to edit the record, you’ll need to put in the itype before you can save it.
However, if the structure of the record is faulty, importing will stop. Then you have to figure where the faulty record is, correct it, and try to import again. When I was importing an especially annoying batch of MARC records I had to break them down into groups—I think it was 100 records per group—then upload them, find the group with the problem record, divide the group in half, upload that half, etc., narrowing things down until I found the problem. I haven’t had that problem recently, and later versions of Koha may point out where the faulty record is (I hope so!). Koha is a small but interesting part of my job, and even after ten years of being a sysadmin I still only learn things when I need to.
