@Brendan, the package was simply 'linux' so moving....
Ubuntu 18.04 (bionic) reached end-of-standard-support on May 31, 2023.
So changing status to 'Incomplete'
Is this still an issue when using a currently supported release?

Title:
Sound card not detected (Dummy Output) after update to kernel
  4.15.0-177-generic or 4.15.0.180-generic

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Hardware: Dell XPS 13 with Intel HD onboard sound (Realtek HD ALC3246)

Expected: Sound to work, mic to work, sound card recognised in settings.
What happened instead: Dummy sound only available card, sound does not work,
