So I was able to get back into a functioning state. I booted back into the 4.4.0-31-generic kernel, re-installed the nouveau driver via Additional Drivers Rebooted and chose the 4.4.0-45-generic kernel Re-install the nvidia 367.57 drivers via Additional Drivers
However, something here seems to clunky if one has to do that to get the drivers to work. That worked for a short 24 hours. Then this morning, I got an update for my nvidia drivers. After I upgraded the drivers, I could no longer boot into ubuntu with kernel 4.4.0-45-generic. If I booted with kernel 4.4.0-31-generic, I no longer had an issue.
