Hm, I running i386. If a remember correctly (the faster) qt-4.3.1 was installed from packages and (the slower) qt-4.4.0 was built by hand or installed from miwi's packagesite (which is also built by hand?). That would be opposite to what you describe :/ I will check that again and maybe rebuild qt-4.4.0 on my machines to see if that changes anything. After that I will file a PR with the trolls.
