The mouse click takes down the login screen. Nothing else is up yet, so you only see the black screen. On first login it can take a long time to come up, so you might have bailed before it was finished. However, I do have a bugged logged against KWin [bug 163829], that it won't start if I log in from a KDE3 kdm login manager. I haven't seen it recently, so maybe it has been fixed. But I am keeping it open a while longer to make sure.
