I'm not entirely sure, but I think support for triggers first came in MySQL-5.6, so that would be a version issue. I think you are trying to start an existing internal MariaDB-10.x DB, this will not work with the old MariaDB-5.x. Try creating a new DB. An internal MariaDB database created under 10.5 can run with 10.6, but needs a mariadb_upgrade execution if digiKam changes something in the tables during an update. However, in the case of an update error, we now try to carry out this database upgrade if we recognize it in the log files. At the moment I strongly advise against using an external DB created under 10.x with 5.5.x as long as the issue of trigger support has not been clarified.
