You can but not need to move the cursor away from where the Kickoff window is 4) Hit Meta or mouse click on the start menu and type "Kat", finally after a short pause add the "e". Now the search results change and the selection jumps to the position (height) where the Kate icon was before. I added a screenshot composition to this comment to make things a bit clearer.
