here something new!
i rebooted my laptop and found my hdmi overlaying my vga screen as seen in the
kde screen settings monitor.

it doesnt end there, coz when i run the following, nothing happens:
xrandr --output LVDS1 --off --output VGA1 --auto --output HDMI3 --auto
--left-of VGA1 --primary

and theres more!
if i use kde screen settings to set my monitors and hit apply and then am happy
with the results. when i come to close the window it asks me if want to apply
my settings(?! i just did!)  and if i "apply" my settings to close (note both
monitors side by side) it will go back to what it was as when i logged in, hdmi
overlaying vga!

this is irritating, confusing, inefficient, time wasting and upsetting
