I mean, I never really tried to read a lot about it but I always though you would not need to unninstall your driver since all the new drivers comes with mode setting by default. That is, for example, from Arch Linux wiki: Late KMS start Intel, Nouveau, ATI and AMDGPU drivers already enable KMS automatically for all chipsets, so you need not install it manually.
