In this case, you don't need to compile plasma-desktop. The easiest way to test this is going to be to patch the `config/main.xml` and `ui/FolderViewLayer.qml` files in `/usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.desktopcontainment/contents` with the changes in the MR.
