It's there for those users who might have dozens of documents open. Instead of
trying to find the tab they can use that button and type some or all of the
filename and easily switch to that file.
I'd definitely suggest reporting it to the Numix team.
As for Pinephone you'd be best off jumping into their chat room to discuss
that.
