The file format hasn't changed, though since 4.2.8 or 4.2.9 we use quazip
instead of karchive to save .kra files. But in any case, when checking a large
number .kra files, it didn't make much difference which version of Krita a file
was created with; sometimes kimageformats could load the file, sometimes it
couldn't.

I suspect that Digikam uses frameworks-kimageformats to open the files, just
like gwenview does.
