If a restart of Gwenview does not fix the issue, but a restart of the computer
does, I'm pretty sure Gwenview cannot be at fault.

Sounds like excessive swapping or high CPU usage to me, you might want to check
with KSysGuard. Also double-check whether other apps are affected too, e.g. by
opening an image in Okular.

I'm closing this for now, but feel free to reopen and possibly change the
Bugzilla product once you have more certainty on what component is causing the
issue. In that case a video recording might be helpful, and looking at it with
gdb.
