If the CPU load stayed low after restarting plasmashell it also didn't go up when the next image change occurred. In that case I only see a short spike every time the image changes. Another thing I found in the meantime: I have logged into a second session using a newly created test user and I can't reproduce the problem with this user at all, even with the original main.qml file. I tried to setup the desktop in the same way I have on my normal user account: Creating 3 activities and activate the slideshow on all of them using the same folder for the images I have used on my normal user account. I also see that the CPU load of plasmashell even with static background images is slighlty higher on my normal user account. Here I have always ~2% for plasmashell. On the test user plasmashell stays below 1% even with the slideshow active and I only see short spikes when the background image changes or I change the to another activity.
