possibly an issue with your java.

please tell
- operating system
- java version
- OJ version

some pointers:

1.
if your jre is older try either the latest java7 or 8.

2.
also, if your on windows activate console logging by editing
'bin/oj_windows.bat', find

rem -- uncomment to use 'java' for console output, if unset defaults to 'javaw'
for background jre  --
rem set JAVA_BIN=java

remove the rem of the second line

rem -- uncomment to use 'java' for console output, if unset defaults to 'javaw'
for background jre  --
set JAVA_BIN=java

now pay attention to it's output when you (re-)load a problematic wms layer.

if your on Linux or Mac start via script and observe the Terminal window.

3.
try to enforce a different image format, gif/jpg instead of png
