Hi, I think that it is the right thing to do and with 3.8.x snaphot version because we know that 3.7.x will make trouble with the next to come Spatialite native binaries. OJ+ would then have a fast pure java spatialite blob reader out-of-the box. We could prepare a separate download for spatialite binaries. Perhaps we could put them into the same place than GDAL binaries and make a good and easy to find documentation about how to install those.
About GDAL binaries, the trial package that Ede made contains a lot of extra like MapServer executable and GDAL utility programs. It is all good stuff but perhaps we could make a more lean packege for making the download size smaller. However, I am not sure what dlls are compulsory for making GDAL to work for each formats.
