I actually agree with Larry that the raster and vector modifiers
aren't really self explanatory. He's right that geospatial concepts
are pretty abstract, but I don't know many ways to get around that
other than propagating some standard symbols for them. That's why in
making GeoSilk we chose to adopt the metaphors and images used by uDig
rather than reinvent the wheel. Granted things aren't perfect, but it
gets a step closer towards a common language.
When you think about it, using a floppy disk icon to represent the
idea of "saving a file" in Microsoft Word doesn't make all that much
sense either (especially not anymore) but we've come to recognize the
symbol and I suppose that is why a floppy is still the icon for "Save"
in Famfamfam's Silk icon set.
If you have suggestions for improving or expanding the GeoSilk icon
set please let me know, I always appreciate feedback. :)

huh.. seems like you really looked already into them - while I
haven't.
Maybe we should then look into the gvSIG ones too (if they are "open",
since they had some nice ones too that where Silk/FamFamFam related.)
thanks for your opinion

Also,
the silk set is really too small for anything but menu icons. The
standard icons are brilliant, but the mapping specific ones are just
ok. Part of that is that the concepts that they are trying to
portray
are too abstract. Just my 2 cents.
