Jukka, I'm sorry it is taking me so long to get to this. It definitely sounds like you have found a bug with OpenJUMP's ECW support. I have modified Bug #1821235 with your comments. (A bug report for this problem had already been filed, but your description was much better.)
I can't promise when this will be fixed, but thank you very much for reporting the problem. Please continue to do so. The bug reports are noticed and appreciated.
