We are using git post-receive hook to trigger jenkins build via jenkins ssh daemon. If the push created a new branch/tag, the hook will trigger a jenkins job to generate a standard job for the new branc/tag, and kick off a build; otherwise it will trigger build of an existing for the branch/tag. I think you can also trigger a parameterized job which takes the tag name and pass this to git plgin.
