I think there was a fix published on Xerces SVN after Xerces-J 2.10.0 was released, that probably solves this problems.
Please try to use the latest file available here, https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/xerces/java/branches/xml-schema-1.1-dev/src/org/apache/xerces/impl/xs/util/XSTypeHelper.java and try running your example again. It would be great, if you can report if that works. If it doesn't please feel free to report the outcome, or report a bug.
