Hi Mikael, Definitely looks like a bug in the sample or the XSTypeHelper class in Xerces.
If the code you posted is intended to be a contribution to Xerces-J please ask your co-worker to open a JIRA issue [1] and attach the patch as well as sending a signed CLA [2] to Apache if they don't already have one on file or alternatively answer the contributor questions for small bug fixes on the JIRA issue.
