Jan Høydahl commented on SOLR-18119:
------------------------------------
The GraalPy PR is here [https://github.com/apache/solr/pull/5034]
Note in particular the {{-Psolr.python.mode=system|graalpy|auto}} flag that
gives you predictable engine if you want.
For most developers, it will be as today, python3 will exist locally, but for
CI and the drive-by contributor, GraalPy will be chosen.
If anyone fancy developing the kind of tooling we're talking about here in pure
Java, then feel free. It'd be a nightmare and many more lines of code than
their py equivalents. I agree that core tools that will run on every or most
builds should not require other than the JVM. So for these two scripts, perhaps
GraalPy turns out to be a stop-gap solution until someone are comfortable
porting them. Java *IS* becoming a more pleasant language with records, text
blocks, soon native JSON support, support for unning a .java file without
compiling etc. Approaching Kotlin...
> Changes.html generation is quietly skipped if python3 not found, can cause
> downstream tasks to fail confusingly

> ChangesToHtmlTask will log a warning if python3 doesn't exist – but it does
> not fail.
> downstream tasks that (implicitly) depend on the existence of Changes.html
> will subsequently fail...

> This can be very confusing on jenkins boxes – such as our Windows jenkins
> build, which does not have python3 – when people don't know/realize that
> {{:solr:documentation:changesToHtml}} quietly did nothing.
