   Thanks @rmuir -- I'll do that next time.  Quite happy to sidestep such 
trouble!
   
   Still digging ... I tried G1GC (vs current non-default throughput collector 
`ParallelGC`) and it didn't change anything.  I'm now down to changes that 
caused a state change in the hardware/OS/BIOS itself ... I may try upgrading 
the BIOS if it comes to that; it is quite old, and for so many core boxes, 
maybe there are important fixes.
