Actually, it's because I was agreeing with the women-tend-to-
understate view without connecting it to or addressing the
men-tend-to-overstate issue. I see your point though, I
should have qualified my response!

*That* said, to address both views, I believe they're both
true: In general, women are conditioned to be under-confident
while in general, men are expected to be born with the
inherent ability to fix <technical gadget>. I do believe that
the latter has *some* influence on the former ("Ooh, I'm just
so dumb compared to Bill" [because of what Bill says he knows,
not what he does know]). I blame mostly social standards, as
I also believe that **in general** most people are sheep and
will blindly eat whatever the ruling class feeds them. Kind
of a pessimistic view I know ... perhaps I've just happened
to be exposed to a too-large percentage of one group over
another.

I also agree with your tech viewpoint that it's easier to deal
with one who plays dumb than one who professes to know what
he/she doesn't. A friend in the field recently got called by
a luser who wanted to adjust his screen resolution but didn't
know how. By the time Paul got there, the luser had dismantled
the entire PC; drives, motherboard, all laying in pieces on
his desk and he was working on dismantling the power supply when
Paul got there. I'm actually curious as to why the luser
didn't try taking the monitor apart. If *I* was of the frame of
mind that "screen resolution" must be some internal mechanical
thing, I'd think it would be inside the ... screen.

Go figure.
