Vinnie commented that we live in a "lookist" society. Humanity in
general distinguishes things most commonly using sight, ergo appearance
will be a primary factor in peoples initial characterization of you
regardless of society. That is to say looking under the surface
requires thoughtful attention. Taking things at face value until proven
otherwise is an instinct. It's only the particular visual cues that
change from society to society, not the fact that we're judged ( and
judging ) by them.

Thinking about it, I certainly pre-judge people by their appearance.
You can probably all conjur a mental image (for example) of a guy whos
topics of conversation run to beer, utes (pickups for the americans) and
shotguns. I once thought I was above judging on appearance, but I'm
not. I am open to changing my opinion in the face of contradictory
data, which I think is about as good as you can expect.

And now, a favourite little ditty from the muppets:

We're ugly, ugly, ugly as sin
but beautiful's out, ugly's in.
If you're ugly like me, you're in good company.
There are millions of us who're ugly.

(For best effect, should be sung by a crowd of drunks)
