I was in an antiques shop yesterday, and got talking to the shop
assistant ... and made a discovery:
She was a programmer back in the punchcard days.
I've semi-invited her to give a talk on her experiences and what
programming was like then, to local user groups. (Now I need to get
in touch with local user groups and check whether they'd be as
fascinated
as I am! Heh.. ok, I'm horrid....)
But it got me thinking.. there's an idea for something interesting for
Linuxchix groups, LUGs, and everything else. Look for the people who
were programming or engineering with 'puters in the 50's and 60's.
There'll be some in your community. And she was fascinating to listen
to.
And she was very interested. Wanted to know how we got from the PDP-11
series to PCs.
