Here's an example. I don't want to sound bitter, but it
is what is going on.
<RANT>
The isp where I work only has men in the technical
areas, and mostly women in residential sales. There is
only one guy in residential sales right now, and he
won't be there for long because he is going to be one of
the web designers in a month. In corporate sales there
is more likelyhood for a woman to advance. There is one
woman there now, and a woman is in charge of corporate
ADSL sales.
I am not sure about pay specifically. However, I make
$7.50/h. The Helpdesk guys make $8.50 and up. There is
constant bitching from the 'higher-ups' that res. sales
salaries drain too much from the company. It is
impossible for a girl to transfer over to ANY tech
position.
(The tech-guys themselves are cool. I've gotten a LOT of
respect from them (generally).)
The guy who was (briefly) our manager did not come to
one meeting because he did not want to be involved in
the, and I quote, "Cat fight" that would ensue. There
was NO "cat fight". It went off very well. He never,
ever, came to any meetings, and never returned the phone
calls of our (female) res. sales manager... And HE was
put in charge of all this. Thank GOD he fsked up and was
transferred. Now he's fsking up the ordering of ADSL
modems. We NEVER have enough of anything for our
customers. I DO NOT like having to tell every customer
who walks in that the modem they wanted is NOT CURRENTLY
IN STOCK EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE CALLED TO COME IN AND GET
IT!!!!!!! (Can you tell I hate the guy?)
Dunno about you, but it seems to me that the women in
the company I work for do NOT get any respect from
management. One of them is trying his best to make our
lives VERY DIFFICULT. We are not paid well, we are not
respected, they only seem to want to hire women who are
high-school drop outs, or are currently in high-school.
I don't fit into this case... and I've wondered a few
times why I was hired... I don't fit the model...
</RANT>
*whew*
So. Yes, discrimination exists. It sure does. I defy
ANYONE to tell me that it doesn't, and isn't based on
gender. (small rant again: One guy from tech support was
hired into systems (a friend of mine and a really nice
guy) and he DIDN'T have any experience with system
administration at all. He was a Very Good Tech Support
guy. Very bright. However, they will not hire very
bright females into tech support. /rant)
I suppose I could try changing jobs. However I do not
think it will get any better if I change companies. I'll
just stay where I am and continue to improve my
education and skills. Then I'll blow that popsicle
stand. And sucks to be them when they have NO res. sales
ppl. with ANY clue as to what a computer is, or how to
find things on the internet.
