Well, perhaps you are right. My experience in free software projects is rather limited to some porting groups which had no leadership per se, but rather worked cooperatively. I have not worked on the Linux kernel except to submit fixes to the occasional device driver in the pre-1.0 days, when I would simply email the fix to Linus and he either used it or not...
