I had some serious distrust of github, and I still feel like it is way too easy for projects to languish into oblivion on sites like that (see sourceforge for example.)
Some of the folks on the ioquake3 IRC channel and elsewhere had been trying to convince me every so often for a long time now to move it to github. I was finally convinced by Timbo that it was time to do it and so we did. eviljoel has done some tremendous work in fixing the issues that the gitorious installation at git.iodoom.org had, but it remains a very flawed system that is taking time which would be better spent elsewhere. iodoom3's overall lack of progress is entirely my fault and I apologize for that. I created my own little sourceforge with gitorious and moving iodoom3 off of it makes sense when I have the time/balls to actually apply patches and run it properly. This seems unlikely with dhewm3 already existing as you point out, but I don't think I'd completely give up hope on the idea either.
