We did not decide yet that we will stop to support 5.3 right after the 5.4 release. And for one, I think we should continue to suport it (strict maintenance mode) for a year or two. We can't simply say "heh look, it is dead" as we got no plan until now. Things are easier for 5.4 and later as we have now a clear release life cycle (as defined in the RFC).
