I'm just starting with the internal PHP development. Do you have some sort of common development environment? Eclipse project or the like?
If you use eclipse, I personally just loaded whole PHP source dir into Eclipse C/C++ project and it seems to be quite fine with it. No build of course, but it's easy enough from command line (buildconf, configure, make, you're done) and if you absolutely must I'm sure there's a way to do it in eclipse too...
