There were a few suspicious bugs that were bogus due to lack of short examples and so on that probably could be traced to this issue. While I do agree that this is an uncommon problem, it does affect a fair number of users.
Does everyone else think that this issue warrants starting a new version branch?
If there is more then one reason (bug fix) to start a new branch I'd say so. For example we could also fix the use of short for refcount inside zval_struct, if 4.4 branch is to be made.
