Building a package manager is hard, and getting a package manager adopted 
requires the network effect of a community using it. Jordi, Nils, et al have 
done a fantastic job with Composer, and it has a near 100% buy-in from the 
community, with hundreds of thousands of published packages. 

It already supports *requiring* extensions; being able to *install* extensions 
is a much harder job, but that's being worked on now.

I would need an extremely persuasive argument to pay any attention at all to an 
incompatible alternative.
