From memory, I believe it was Alan Coopersmith who stated to remove all the linked "10-......" entries in /etc/fonts/conf.d. For me it was just simply add the links back, all is fine for me now.
Just to be sure: does or does not b129 (OpenSolaris) contain these 10*
links in /etc/fonts/conf.d directory? On my system it does not but I
can't remember removing them in the past. If they should be there I just
recreate them too.

My b129 /etc/fonts/conf.d directory does not any entries starting "10-*". I have the ttf-fonts-core package installed from the extras repo, but have not made any other font changes.

The 10-* links in /etc/fonts/conf.d are removed from 129, they were
added by mistake (bug 12676). You may want to experiment adding just:
- one of 10-autohint.conf, 10-unhinted.conf
- one of 10-no-sub-pixel.conf, 10-sub-pixel-*
or create your own configuration using ~/.fonts.conf.

For my information, where does Firefox/Thunderbird get their fonts from and why does it appear not to have any affect without the 10- linking. I was reading it has something to do with Cairo.
