what is the reason why there is no osol-1002-XXX-sparc.iso so far?
Because the text mode installer isn't done yet, and most SPARC
systems supported by opensolaris wouldn't be able to use the
graphical installer.
hmm -- is this of no priority for osol-1002 (final)? as there will be
no SXCE releases (sparc bootable media) anymore
(http://mail.opensolaris.org/pipermail/opensolaris-announce/2009-August/001220.html)
i thought osol is going to be its replacement...

i feel an unstable/unfinished osol-1002-XXX-sparc.iso would be
better then just no bootable media for sparc.
Text mode installer is a priority. There are a number of engineers actively working on it, we can only get there so fast. This is an open project and you are welcome to contribute in anyway you can. The details are here:

thanks for the link and explanations!

you mean to say text mode is a must for a sparc bootable image --
without it, there will be no osol-1002-XXX-sparc.iso?

[Cc'ing caiman] is this (textmode installer) planned to be finished for
osol-1002 final?

is it further planned to have a osol-1002-sparc.iso?

Text Install and Bootable AI are 2 different projects.

The AI Install requires a manifest with instruction on how the client should do the install. The manifest is currently made available over the network at boot time from an AI server.

The bootable AI project will provide a method where the user does not need to configure an AI server to provide the AI client with a manifest. Using the Bootable AI image the user can provide a URL to an AI client manifest. Also the Bootable AI image will contain a default manifest. So one could boot the Bootable AI image, select install from default manifest on the GRUB menu. With no need to configure an AI server.

The Text installer is a different project all together. It is more like the LiveCD without a GUI. Because SPARC will not have the GUI used by the LiveCD a different installer based on text screens is needed.

More about these projects can be learned here:

For the Bootable AI project see the "Documents" at the top of the page:

For the Text Installer see:
