Hi! Sam / linux romeo

Nice to see u fell in love with Linux / OpenBSD so strongly.... and as i am one of  those who himself is in the the same process of moving from Windozz to Linux, i would like to share some of my insight and experience. That you are planning to leave your present job so that you can 'study' Linux for few months and then get back in the job scenario, i will advise you not to do so. On the other had i can suggest that you buy one PC, or if you have one at home good, and load the operating system of your choice, either Linux or OpenBSD or M$ Widozzz or all the three and practice on it for some time in the evening or whenever you can take out time, with your enthusiasm it should not be a problem, work on it. Since you are already handling Sun Solaris, you just might not need so much time to get used to / become an expert on Linux. Linux has its own GPL'd SQL data bases.... MySQL ,  PostgreSQL, Firebird and SAP db, etc. So stick to DBA as when you apply! for a job again you can show the previous work experience also and at the same time keep studying. There are few free projects which are being pursued by various people on the list.... one of them is introducing Linux in various schools and showing a possibility to the School's administration that it will save the school many license's fee, etc. To find out for more projects, mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED].

Second advice, NEVER ask question on the list like 'Which programmig language should i learn?' ----highly inflamable topics. Where passions for their respective supported language runs high and pales even the passion for cricket. This advice also goes for which distribution should you load ..... RedHat / Suse / Debian / Gentoo etc.?

Thirdly there are many great and experienced people on the list who can support you in your endeavour but never forget you first try and then mail the problem on the list, support .. for eg. i have heard there is one 'dari wala baba' on the mail list who does'nt live in India but is a real guru. Then there are Two 'elderly', as some one said, people on the list who agree to disagree....one of them is Raju (as you also have rightly called him 'guru'), again if no one can then these 'elderly' people can guide you. If you smoke, then be warned, you are likely to be addressed as '....that gentelman who smokes'.

So about high profermance computing .... first start working and get comfortable as much as possible with Linux .... and some time in between you will need to chart your own course, as to how to be able to go up to High Performance Computing. There is no fixed rule or so as to say any Thumb rule for moving up to that level, every individuals capacity governs his / her own ability.

oh by the way one thumb rule ....make sure you have ooodles of patience and perseverance.

So great to have you on board ... and all the best.
