I will try to explain why we do not have to thank ARPA, Von Neuman
etc. and call the system as
"ARPA-Hitler-GNU-Neuman-Ada-Blah-Blah-Linux".

The people at GNU Project were working to put together the whole
system that would be completely Free(as in Free India). The people at
ARPA had no such goal. And you can bet Hitler never never ever
dreamed
about it. Some GNU components needed substantial change to work with
Linux. Integrating a complete system as a distribution that would
work
``out of the box'' was a big job, too.

The GNU Project supports GNU/Linux systems as well as the GNU
system--even with funds. They have funded the rewriting of the
Linux-related extensions to the GNU C library, so that now they are
well integrated, and the newest GNU/Linux systems use the current
library release with no changes.

Linux is the kernel, one of the essential major components of the
system. The system as a whole is more or less the GNU system, with
Linux added. When you're talking about this combination, please call
it ``GNU/Linux''.

Give credit where credit is due. Linux is just the kernel. Without the efforts of
people involved with the GNU project the Linux kernel would not be very useful to most
people.See http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html to know more
