linux is the name of the kernel, one central piece of software in an operating system. the operating system itself could contain hundreds of utilities, and other types of software. most of these other software were made before the birth of Linux kernel software. think of these other software (and hundreds of them) as the garden in which Linus planted his seeds to give birth to one flower called Linux, the kernel software. so naturally, the garden is bigger than the one flower. that garden is called GNU, and is made of hundreds of other pieces of important software. when you call the operating system in your computer Linux, it is wrong. you may just call it Linux, but in truth, it is made of both Linux the kernel, and tonnes of GNU software. hence the word: GnuLinux, or Gnu/Linux. You could also make a GNU operating system without the LInux kernel at all, and it could still work. An alternative to the Linux kernel is called Hurd, though it is still in some kind of development stage, and some people have reported using it. this is called Gnu/Hurd find out more about gnu from gnu.org hope this answers your query. :-) LL ================================================ To unsubscribe, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe in subject header.
