ACM0...1...2...3.. etc.  as per my knowledge is automatically assigned to
USB Devices/ USB Modems when you say modprobe acm and in fact in my SuSE
system that is automatically done at the time of bootup without even saying
modprobe acm from shell prompt.

How about checking your /dev tree for any occurences of ttyACM*

And if you do find some devices by this name then do the following which I
used to verify:

on one console say cat > ttyACMn
and on other say cat < ttyACMn

then on first console type AT
then the second console should show OK.

If not getting then try changing n.
