are you using the redhat flavour of linux.
 
the thing in redhat you have to enable telnet in the new versions. I am not too sure but in the new version of redhat i think telnet is disabled. all you got to do is enable it. how? do not ask me. I think it there is something with /etc/service or something like that.
 
that is where the default services are .
 
ping would work anyways becuase your network is up.

Hii every one

    i have Linux based networking in 3 Pcs . i have installed and configured the NIS , NFS and Samba server succesfully . but when i try to execute the Telnet Command to login remote machines , it displays the 'Connection Refused ' message .. while ping Command is executed successfully .. what's wrong with system .

  except this any one can tell me the command which shows the list of users currently login in different remote machines including local host with other usefull options like idle time , etc

 and how can i execute Talk command ,
