I am facing very serious problem with my mail server. The problem is that maximum file limit reaches after sometime and server start giving following messages in /var/log/messages :-
VFS: file-max limit 32768 reached
Kernel: Can't locate module net-pf-10
PAM : adding faulty module : /lib/security/pam_cracklib.so
After following errors the mail server is not able to open any file, and I thus get error message Unable_to_run_qmail-remote and no mails are delivered. I have recently increased the maximum number of files that can be opened from 16384 to 32768 by this comand echo 32768 /proc/sys/fs/file-max. I don't think this problem can be solved by further increasing file-max limit. There is something on server that is causing unnecessary files to be opened. can somebody tell me how to check that
- how many files are opened on server
- what all files are opened and what applications have opened those files.
Can somebody pls. help me to find out what is wrong with the system. Your help is appreciated.
