Yes Its possible to change your career if you want. Most of the admins
would like to learn or would have learnt some scripting language  as part
of their skillset and this might to ease their life and save time. There
can be many repetitive work which can be automated. using Unix power tools,
expect send and etc.

This is completely dependant on your skill, company's requirement, and
negotiation. May be theres a lot of demand  for programmers in general but
that does not mean that you will be paid more as a programmer..

There is no limit and its not a point of what you should know, but its
about what you want to know.
